Comcast Bid for Time Warner Cable on the Rocks

UPDATE: Bloomberg News, Politico and the New York Times are reporting that Comcast could abandon its proposed merger with Time Warner Cable as early as Friday. Stay tuned.

On Wednesday evening, news broke that the FCC may recommend hearings to review Comcast’s bid to take over Time Warner Cable. If true, such a move could spell the end of this massive merger.

The Wall Street Journal called a recommendation like this a “deal-killer.”

The news from the FCC follows a report from Bloomberg News that the Justice Department had similar doubts about the proposed mega-merger. And members of Congress are pushing back too, with six senators calling on regulators to block the deal.

While the news is positive – and a strong indication that Washington is listening to the nearly 1 million people who have spoken out against this mega-merger – the fight to stop this deal is far from over.

Thanks in part to this grassroots opposition, a deal that Comcast thought inevitable is now on the rocks. As was true in the Net Neutrality debate, people power is making a difference.

Still, Comcast has no intention of going down quietly. According to the Guardian, the cable colossus has spent nearly $5 million on lobbying this year.

We expect it will pull out all the stops to get what it wants, and we need to continue to pressure Washington to reject this deal.

Right now, you can pick up the phone and call the FCC. Tell it to stay strong and block the proposed takeover.
