This week, Free Press joined a wide-ranging array of groups in signing a letter opposing a cybersecurity bill under consideration in the Senate. 

The bill — the Cyber Security Act of 2012 (S. 2105) — is co-sponsored by Sens. Joe Lieberman and Susan Collins. Like the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, which passed last month in the House, this bill would make it easier for companies like Facebook and Google to share our personal information with federal authorities. It would introduce a new online spying regime that would seriously damage our ability to communicate online.

In addition to civil liberties stalwarts like the ACLU and the Electronic Frontier Foundation , our fellow signees include the American Association of Practicing Psychiatrists, the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, the Constitution Project, the Muslim Public Affairs Council, Reporters Without Borders and the Republican Liberty Caucus. This list couldn't be more diverse — but these groups are all united in their desire to stand up for our online rights. 

We'll be ramping up our efforts to stop this bill in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you can tell the Senate to vote "no" on any bill that violates our freedom to communicate online.
