WASHINGTON -- On Monday, Sens. Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal and Reps. Henry Waxman and Anna Eshoo introduced the Open Internet Preservation Act of 2014, which would reinstate the Federal Communications Commission’s open Internet rules. Last month the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned these rules, which prohibited Internet service providers from blocking or discriminating against Internet traffic.
Free Press Action Fund Associate Policy Director Chancellar Williams made the following statement:
“We’re pleased that members of Congress are pushing the FCC to restore the no-blocking and nondiscrimination provisions that were at the heart of the FCC’s Net Neutrality rules. And as the recent court decision made clear, the only way the FCC can implement these critical protections is by first reclassifying broadband as a common-carrier service.
“The president has spoken, 1 million people have spoken, and now Congress has spoken. Chairman Tom Wheeler and the FCC must protect the open Internet."
